New study: Hearing loss and tinnitus common in cancer survivors

A recent study by researchers at the University of California in San Francisco (UCSF) showed that adult cancer survivors often experience hearing loss.

The study included 273 people who experienced cancer five years before participation. More than half of the study participants who had received chemotherapy treatment also experienced “significant hearing problems,” according to researchers, and more than a third experienced tinnitus.

Thirty-one percent of participants also denied having hearing loss, but were later found to have hearing loss in a hearing test. 

According to a UCSF press release, “the authors noted that because hearing loss is often underestimated, routine screening and follow-up should be done by hearing professionals. Individualized management plans for tinnitus require consultation with specialist clinicians.”
