How to clean your hearing aids

Keeping your hearing aids clean is one of the most important things you can do to ensure clear sound and long-lasting performance. Regular cleaning prevents blockages, feedback, and damage caused by earwax, dust or moisture - and it only takes a few minutes.

Wipe the hearing aid off with a soft, dry cloth. If the microphone grid is blocked, contact your hearing care professional. If you notice dirt on the microphone covers, gently blow it away or wipe it off with a soft cloth.

Remove any visible earwax from around the sound outlet with the small brush or cloth. If the sound outlet is blocked, change the wax guard.

Many of WIdex hearing aids have a wax guard near the tip of the hearing aid that protects against buildup. Replace it with a model-appropriate wax guard as soon as it looks clogged or as recommended by your hearing care professional.

Example step-by-step procedure for a RIC (workflow and type of wax guard may differ but the principles shown here remain the same):

Use a small brush (such as the one provided with the hearing aids) to remove any debris from the charging slots gently. Wipe the charger with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust or residue. Avoid using sharp objects, liquids, or excessive force, as these could damage the charging contacts.

Always place your hearing aids in their protective case or charging station when not in use. This keeps them safe from dust, drops, and damage - especially during travel or overnight.

Never leave your hearing aids in the bathroom, near a window, or on top of a radiator or TV. Moisture and heat can damage the electronics or battery over time. Please refer to the User Instruction booklet for the optimal operating conditions of your hearing aids.

Common mistakes to avoid with your hearing aids

Even the best hearing aids need a little care. Avoiding these common mistakes can help you get the most out of your Widex devices — and keep them performing at their best.

Moisture is one of the leading causes for malfunctions in hearing aids. Always remove them before bathing or swimming. Even if your hearing aids are water-resistant, they are not water proof (especially the external components of the hearing aids like the receiver/receiver wire attached to RIC-style hearing aids). Exposure to water can damage the microphones, receivers, or internal electronics.

Sprays, gels, perfume, sunscreen, and lotions can clog microphone openings and corrode surfaces. Apply these before putting on your hearing aid.

Daily cleaning routines for the hearing aids can prevent buildup from blocking sound output and general wear and tear. Skipping this step may lead to reduced performance.

Avoid leaving your hearing aids in the bathroom, in a hot car, or on a windowsill. High heat, humidity, and extended exposure to direct sunlight can damage hearing aid components.

Always dry and clean your hands before handling your hearing aids, especially when inserting, removing, or cleaning them.
