What are the benefits of a rechargeable hearing aid vs. hearing aids with disposable batteries? 
First, it is important to learn how disposable hearing aid batteries work. Traditionally hearing aid batteries were made with mercury, these days the zinc air battery is most popular. Zinc air batteries require oxygen to activate. Thus, once the sticky tab on the back is removed, the battery starts to drain, even when not in use. For example, once the tab is removed, the average lifespan of a size 10 battery is 3-7 days. Therefore, on average, a size 10 battery would need to be replaced every 5 days.

What can I do to prolong the life of my rechargeable hearing aid?

  • When a hearing aid has too high of a current drain, it is more likely to drain the battery completely, especially when streaming. 
  • If the battery is completely drained, it needs a full 6-8 hours to charge. If not charged for the full time, the battery will start the next day only partially charged, resulting in less hours of available use. If this practice is continued overtime, it can affect the performance of the battery.
