I never knew hearing loss could be treated

Narrated by WOII Michael Kibet Sang Kenya Airforce Sports Instructor.

Michael wears Bravo (B2-ITE )in both ears.

I was employed at the Kenya Armed Forces Air force wing in 1982. My Job at the force involved extracting Co2 gas from a 60lbs cylinder to small cylinders ranging from 30 grams To 6 kilograms cylinders. Even though My working environment was extremely noisy, I was not using hearing safety devices hence my hearing ability started deteriorating.

It was not until later in 1984 while in Britain for military training that I realized my hearing was not so good. I had difficulties following conversations and hearing the noises in my environment.

On returning to Kenya in 1985 I went to Hospital for a check up. Later the following year I was referred to an ENT Specialist who informed me that I had sensorineural hearing loss. I was however not referred to an ear specialist. For more than 20 years I struggled with my hearing problems .I was always straining. Unless someone shouted or talked with a very loud voice, I could not hear what he/she was saying.

Later on in 2004 I decided to see Maj Koyiet , an ENT doctor at the forces memorial hospital .He examined me and referred me to Dr. Benson Ototo an Audiologist at Beam Hearing Centre -Nairobi for further examination and advice . At Beam I was examined and introduced to Widex hearing aids . The doctor advised me to consider Widex Bravo hearing aids as a solution to my hearing loss .I was glad , I always thought I would have to live with my problem for the rest of my life . I never knew hearing loss could be treated .I started wearing Bravo hearing aids in the year 2004.The day I received my hearing aids and wore them ,I begun to hear sounds that had been lost. I could hear the noises around me with a lot of ease ,I could also hear my footsteps .This excited me greatly .The hearing aids have helped me bridge the gap that had been created by my hearing problems .Because of my experience, I have asked my father in law and a friend from my home town to come and have their hearing examined and possibly consider Widex hearing aid amplification.

Now I can move on with life. With my hearing aids, I feel more confident among people. I enjoy communicating and meeting friends and colleagues.

Currently, I am working as an athletics sports instructor at the Air force Barracks in Nairobi .I feel confident because I can now perform my duties without any worries. My advice to people with hearing problems is don’t give up, get expert advice from an Audiologist. I thank Widex company for developing hearing aids that have helped people like me.

Paul (33) Bus Driver & IT Student

I used to try and bluff my way out, and I really became quite good at talking my way out of a difficult situation where I had not heard everything. I spent so much energy on this, simply because I wanted to be as normal as everybody else.

Naturally, it was a grind for me to listen to lectures because I had difficulties understanding what people were saying. The hearing aids have changed my life. I am now able to enjoy my studies and make the most of my life.
