Widex sponsors one of the hardest races in the world | As part of the Widex élan “Push the limits” campaign, Widex has cosponsored a volcano race team together with NIKE. The volcano race is considered to be one of the most difficult and physically demanding adventures in the world. It’s all about pushing the limits!
Each year the best adventure teams in the world meet up in Argentina to compete in the Volcano Race, covering a distance of 500 km in total, from Neuquen in Argentina, across the Andes, to Valdivia in Chile. The race is considered to be one of the hardest adventure races in the world. Therefore only the best athletes are qualified to participate in this race. Among this year’s teams were Argentina, USA, Canada, France, Spain, Guatemala, Mexico, Chile and Brazil. Each team consists of four participants, and both sexes must be represented in a team.
The competition is extremely demanding and requires a wide range of sporting skills and endurance. It includes the following disciplines: kayaking, trekking, mountain biking and rappelling. The team’s capacity to keep their bearings is essential. They must advance both day and night in order to cover the distance in the shortest possible time.
Each team is given several maps showing the places they have to reach. No signs of any kind are provided on the route, apart from those provided by nature itself. The teams have to navigate though the rocky Andes, and are not allowed to use GPS in order to reach the finish line. This year’s race started on 30 January and finished on 3 February for the first five teams. The rest of the teams finished the race between 4 and 5 February. Through the race, the teams had to stop at different checkpoints to have their race passport stamped. There were altogether 40 of these checkpoints.
The NIKE-WIDEX Team, using the name AXN-MERREL, won the race in 2004. This year the team consisted of:
Fernando “Mono” Soria (captain of the team) from Neuquen |
Fernando Helling from General Roca |
Gustavo Muñoz from San Martin de los Andes |
Nadia Michel from Gualeguaychu |
Throughout the race, the NIKE-WIDEX Team received special attention. They were followed and filmed by the TV network AXN. The network filmed all their statements and efforts. As a kind of reality show, the program is currently being broadcasted in more than 120 countries.
The NIKE-WIDEX team was leading the race until checkpoint 26. Unfortunately the team captain, Fernando Soria, suffered an injury that affected his physical result, and the team’s performance dropped. Even though the team put in all their efforts and tried to gain back the lost time, they could not catch up with the AXN team from Spain.
